Bologna the Learned

La Dotta, la Grassa, la Rossa — the learned, the fat, the red. Home to the oldest university in the world, seen through its Baroque church interiors and the frescoed coats of arms and ancient library of the Archiginnasio. Out in Piazza Maggiore, the bronze Fountain of Neptune and terracotta rooftops stretching toward the leaning medieval towers, plus a market stall heavy with the cured meats and cheese that earned the city its nickname.
